• In the Formats Superpanel (our full liveblog report & video), Shine, Endemol, FremantleMedia and other leading execs answered the question “what is a good format?” For some, the answer is originality; for others its capacity to connect directly with viewers,  for example by tapping into the growing dual-screen viewing trend (eg. tweeting whilst watching TV); and for others its story-telling potential. Yes, even for non-scripted!

 

The regular MIP Entertainment Masterclass (our full liveblog report & video) took several scandinavian examples of how to make affordable format shows: the solution, of course, is coproduction. Executives from SBS, TV Norge & Kanal 5 shared their experiences with EMC’s Christoph Fey.

 

Last but by no means least, the creation of one of recent years’ most impressive coproductions, historical drama The Pillars of the Earth, was explained by Scott Free Television president David W. Zucker and by Tandem Communications’ Rola Bauer (our full liveblog report & video). Bauer had the unenviable task of mounting coproduction financing for this star-studded 8-part  miniseries premiering on Starz and Channel 4. And here, as a special bonus, is the end result!
