US website TVGuide.com has released the results of an online study of 1586 viewers, on how they use social media whilst watching TV. The results are eye-opening to say the least:

  • Whilst watching TV, 50% of Twitter users tweet about the show; 35% of Facebook users do the same
  • Most people talk about shows before or after (as opposed to during)
  • 20% of respondents now watch more TV to avoid spoilers from their friends via social networks
  • 66% of respondents comment on their shows on social media in order to keep those shows on air! (the second biggest reason for social TV commenting!)

The study also reveals what are the ‘most social’ shows on (US) TV right now: NCIS, American Idol, Criminal Minds, Glee and House top the list.
