During February and March 2011, C21Media conducted a survey into the current trends in the international formats business with 234 executives taking part.

Their collated views provide a great snapshot of the current landscape. A list of the participating companies, and some of the recurring comments made throughout the survey, are included in this report.

Between January 2010 and March 2010 C21’s network of journalists also interviewed the world’s leading free-to-air networks about their current formats thinking. A selection of profiles covering the most active channels are published in the report.

The combined result of both these exercises has produced this C21 Formats Report.
Its purpose is not to be a definitive analysis of the formats business, but a snapshot of current thinking in the sector and a conversation starter for two days of discussion and further examination during MIPFormats 2011.

Its findings show that the formats business is still growing, with 91% of those surveyed expecting to buy or sell the same or more formats in 2011 than 2010.

Many more findings will be presented in Cannes during MIPFormats.

David Jenkinson is editor-in-chief of C21Media, MIPTV’s partner for MIPFormats. The Formats Report will notably be the focus of MIPFormats’ opening session (April 2, 14.00). Full programme here.
